Between long flights, different time zones, and encountering things that are out of our control, it can be extremely challenging to stick to a routine while traveling.
Having a routine is always important, so here are some of my top tips for sticking to good habits, no matter where you are in the world.
1. Use airport time wisely.
If you travel, you know that waiting around in an airport is usually part of the game. While waiting for your flight to board, or during layovers, why not use that time to read a book or listen to a podcast? Part of my personal routine is listening to or reading inspiring material every day. It helps me to gain perspective, especially before a big trip. Kicking off (or ending) your trip on a good note is a great way to maintain a positive, healthy mindset while traveling.
2. Get adjusted to your new time zone.
If you’ve ever dealt with jet lag, you know how frustrating it is. It can have a big impact on your sleep schedule and ability to stay alert throughout the day. As much as you might be tempted to sleep in or take long naps while traveling, try to be present for sunrise and sunset as often as possible. Forcing yourself to stay awake in the new time zone will help your body adjust more quickly to the new time zone.
3. Take the time to stop and reflect.
No matter where I am, I always have a journal with me. Writing is a key part of my routine at home and when I’m on the go. It allows me to take a few minutes to compile my thoughts and jot down important things I need to remember.
4. Get creative with your workout.
Not every place you go will have a gym, so sometimes you have to get creative with how and where you’re going to exercise for the day. I try to plan my workout around wherever I am at the time. For instance, Hawaii is known for its challenging hikes that have rewarding views at the end. When I’m there, that’s always my go-to workout, and it ends up being a fun excursion at the same time! Use your new destination to your advantage and get outside!
5. Set reminders to take important medications.
It’s easy to get distracted while you’re in a new place, especially when you’re on vacation. That’s why I use my phone to help me keep track of the most important parts of my daily routine. Some things, like taking any medications, are a must do—even when you’re on the go. This is particularly true if you’re on birth control pills, also known as, “the Pill,” which must be taken at the same time daily to provide pregnancy prevention. The Pill should not be skipped or taken at intervals exceeding 24 hours. Worried about taking the Pill, or any other medication, while you’re traveling?
